World Juggling Day
16 June 2018
World Juggling Day – What an exciting awareness day! This June jugglers all over the world get set to show off their juggling skills!
The International Jugglers Association (IJA) was founded in June 1947 and IJA has set up the day to ‘help spread the fun of juggling and to bring jugglers together’. What better reason could there be?!
The world’s jugglers have been around for a long, long time. Ancient images on a tomb in Egypt show people juggling, and there are references to it in writings from China, Ireland and Rome. Some jugglers were even punished and suspected of being witches! But it’s well known that juggling was popular again during Renaissance times – when jokers would entertain the royal court!
Do you know how to juggle? There are basic rules for getting started. Like … make sure you’ve got lots of space! You don’t want to be wrecking the house in the process.
It’s also a good idea to choose a set of balls that aren’t too small, or too big. Then you should start by feeling the weight of the balls, by throwing one from your left, to right hand. When you’re ready, you can add ball two into the mix!
You can find out more about how to juggle here. I can already juggle with three balls, so I’m thinking of branching out to some more!
In 2000, the World Juggling Day was celebrated for one day in a campsite in the Lake District, but now people are arriving early to make the most of it – the day has become a weekend event!
And it really is a worldwide interest. In 2014 62 jugglers from 19 countries registered to take part on the day. When I started looking at some of the events that have taken place across the world I was amazed: a picnic in the park in Shanghai, free workshops and show in Mumbai, and a world record attempt for the number of people juggling simultaneously at the Blackpool Tower Circus.
If you decide you’d like to take part at one of the events throughout the world you’ll be able to do plenty of juggling – so visit the World Juggling Day website to find out how you can get involved and see some incredible juggling in action?
