Record Store Day
21 April 2018
Record Store Day – what a great idea! Why, because I love scouring record stores. They have so much character and there is nothing like standing next to like-minded people as music-obsessed as you!
Companies like Warner Brothers and Universal Studios feel the same way, and that’s why they’ve decided to sponsor the day!
We’re all so connected in today’s world with smart phones, tablets and well, you name it …
But communicating over technology so much also makes us more disconnected from everyone else!
So it’s time to unite and remember why we love music and choose to share it with each other. As Ziggy Marley says, ‘Record stores keep the human contact alive!’
In 2011 lead singer of Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne as ambassador for the day. In 2012, for the 5th annual Record Store Day it was the fantastic Iggy Pop who asked us all to be passengers! And in 2013 the ambassador was Jack White. The ambassador for 2014 was Hip Hop artist Chuck D. In 2015 it was the great Dave Grohl (before he fell off stage and broke his leg!). Metallica became ambassador in 2016 and in 2017 it was St Vincent. For 2018 it’s Run the Jewels – featuring rappers El-P and Killer Mike!
When National Awareness Days first featured this day on our website in 2011 we reported that in the UK 50 independent record stores would be taking part. It’s incredible to see how the popularity of Record Store Day has grown, in 2018 over 200 independent record stores will be participating – and some great artists will even perform for free inside the stores!
There will also be signing sessions, goodie bags and some exclusive vinyl and cds released … amongst even more treats that is!
And if that’s not enough to convince you find out why Damien Rice, Paul McCartney, KT Tunstall, Tom Waits and many more musicians are supporting the day!
