Number Day

1 February 2019

Number Day has been running for 1, 2, 3 … many years!

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) wants you to help celebrate our digits: aside from giving us the answers to formulas, maths has given us insights into science and the natural world.  Back in 2010 the NSPCC asked schools to compete in the World’s Biggest Maths Lesson in an effort to break a Guinness World Record.

Did they do it?  Well yes they did!  The largest maths class at multiple venues involved 4,076 students at 30 schools across the UK on 3 December 2010 – all helping to raise funds for the NSPCC – wow!

So who are the NSPCC?  Well, they’re one of our most important charities: they work to stop cruelty to children and have made a huge amount of progress so far.  Since they were established in the 1880’s they have helped over 10 million children in the UK!

So, what will be happening on Number Day?

Well as always, thousands of teachers and pupils will be taking part from places all over the UK!  There will be lots of fun activities for kids from nursery to school age.  All you have to do is register on the Number Day website and you will have your special pack sent out!

It can be difficult to motivate children when it comes to maths.  Why?  Because maths itself is often very difficult!  There is no middle ground when it comes to calculations, and getting there can take a few calculations.  Your answer is either right or wrong – and many mathematicians say it’s the conciseness that is the beauty of maths!

I also that think that it helps a lot if you have a teacher that believes in you and who can be enthusiastic about what you’re learning!  Children will thrive on that, so if you’re a teacher remember to make the day fun for everyone!

10, 9, 8, 7 … the countdown is now on for Number Day 2020!
