Wake up to the sound of birdsong on International Dawn Chorus Day 7 May 2017

International Dawn Chorus Day
International Dawn Chorus Day

International Dawn Chorus Day is held annually on the first Sunday in May, and people are encouraged to rise early to listen to bird song at organised events.  The first ever event was held at Moseley Bog in Birmingham, England in 1984 by the Urban Wildlife Trust.

The dawn chorus is most noticeable in spring when songbirds start to sing as daylight begins.

Dawn Chorus Day is organised by The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country a UK Registered Charity.  Go to the International Dawn Chorus Day website for more information and events in your area.

About The Wildlife Trust

There are 47 local Wildlife Trusts across the whole of the UK, the Isle of Man & Alderney – working for an environment rich in wildlife for everyone.

With over 800,000 members, the Wildlife Trusts are the largest UK voluntary organisation dedicated to conserving the full range of the UK’s habitats and species.

Here are some clips of the dawn chorus from around the world – the UK, USA, and New Zealand respectively.

Waking up to the dawn chorus has a really calming and relaxing effect.  I woke up really early a few weeks ago to the sound of birdsong and it was only just after 3.30am.  I spent sometime listening to the bird merrily singing their hearts out –  unfortunately as I’m not an expert I can’t say which birds I was listening to – but after a short time listening to the calming sound I soon went back to sleep and left the chirping birds to their singing!
