Down Syndrome Day
every 21 March
Downs Syndrome Awareness Week – this year the week will take place from 18-24 March 2019. It has been wrongly assumed that people with this condition cannot do many things that others can – but the truth is that given the opportunity they can live great lives.
DSi (Down Syndrome International) has coordinated World Down Syndrome Day since 2006. However, on 10 November 2012 the United Nations adopted a resolution to designate 21 March as “World Down Syndrome Day”. The aim of the day is to raise awareness and understanding of the condition. The day is also about promoting the rights of those with Down’s Syndrome to enable them to enjoy a full and active life in their communities.
We’re all being asked to wear ‘lots of socks’ on 21 March. Why, you may ask? It’s all because socks look like chromosomes! And, people with Down’s syndrome have a extra chromosome. You can raise awareness on the day by wearing odd socks or why not buy the latest limited edition socks from the Down’s Syndrome Association’s website.
There are lots of other ways you can help too. Why not organise your own sports day or quiz night? Or if you have a talent, use it. For example, if you’re good at art make some cool cards and sell them to raise funds for this cause?
