Byte Night
5 October 2018
Byte Night is a unique event to raise awareness for the Action for Children charity and this year it will be held on 5 October 2018.
Action for Children aims to help children in danger of becoming homeless. They also know it’s about more than taking children off the streets. The reasons WHY they have ended up homeless in the first place also need to be addressed … and hopefully solved in time.
Each year on Byte Night members of the IT industry, in both teams and as individuals, spend a night exposed to the elements and living as a homeless person. Not only does this raise awareness of the conditions faced by the hundreds of young people who face homelessness every year, but it also has a strong impact on those who take part and raises awareness for this amazing charity.
The event first began in 1998 and that year 30 people slept out overnight and they raised and since then there are now over 1400 people sleeping outside on this date each year to raise awareness – and so far they have raised over £221k – what an achievement!
It is estimated that over 100,000 young people experience homelessness each year. The money raised by Action for Children goes towards helping children who have come out of the care system to make lives for themselves and prevent homelessness.
After all homeless people are often condemned. But how do you know why they’re on the streets? I found these personal stories heart-wrenching and they are more likely to spur you into action than anything else.
